I've got a bobcat S650 with SJC controls and I love them. Yes, they are user adjustable - 3 levels of sensitivity. Yes, they take a bit of getting used to if you are coming from something else. My last skid was an 1845c and it was direct hydraulics and instant response. If you weren't very smooth, it could turn into a skid steer rodeo fairly . The term pilot controls or CAT controls has become very over used and in most cases incorrectly. However in this case if asked who else uses the same system as CAT it would not matter if you are talking EH or Pilot because the are both sourced from the same place and that is Rexroth. Case also used Rexroth for its pilots. I have wrist issues due to what I believe skid is steer/excavator operation. I plan on gettting it worked on this Winter. I estimate I have around 25K hours on a skid steer over the last 28 years. It is carpel tunnel and some tendon issues I believe. The newer EH machines are much better. The years before that not so much.
I'm thinking of buying a 2006 Case 445CT and wondering what everyone's thoughts are on them. I have a JD 325 that was my first skid steer, so I learned on hand controls. I now have a T300 too, and it has foot controls. I MUCH prefer the hand controls, but I also much prefer the track machine.
The battle, as it seems, is between the Cat and Case controls. The conversion from a Case to Cat controls is very easy. the conversion from Cat to Case controls can be frustrating. As for ease of operation you should really prefer the Cat controls simply because you can drink coffee in the morning while you drive. the only experience i have with pilot controls was on a volvo mt 90b i think. i was not impressed with the accuracy, seems the shortest distance you could drive was 6 inches. our jcb skid steer has the electric controls, which i am for the most part impressed with. The CAT B series and CASE 400 series from 2006.5 until now use pilot controls. The same Rexroth control system is used in both only CASE did a better job on putting the system together IMHO. Its much more smooth. CATs C series uses EH controls. Go to Equipment Alley.com to check out some CASE machines. It was purchased new by a small town near us to snowblow sidewalks and the occasional summer pothole repair. The extra 10 or so HP over the Komatsu is very handy and the JD is speced with the EH performance package and high flow aux at 28 gpm. Likes: Enclosed cab with heat and upgraded seat(no A/C-darn it) High flow EH controls are smooth
The latest generation of EH controls is much better than the originals as far as dependability. I have an early 2012 TR320 that has had three control handles prior to 800 hours. I have a 2014 SV300 with 800 hours that has not had any issues. So I think they got the Rexroth handles dialed in. As far as the EH controls, get use to it this just the beginning. The have incorporated an option called AMICS, it can allow you to adjust the speed of your bucket, for instance you want to load truck set it on 3 for fast cycle times. Set it on 1 for finish grading and set it on 2 for everyday use. I've got a bobcat S650 with SJC controls and I love them. Yes, they are user adjustable - 3 levels of sensitivity.
