I received all the components this weekend to convert it to 3-axis CNC. I haven't installed anything on the mill yet. I have the drives on a table next to me while I'm learning Mach 3 software. I'm not sure what I'll make first. don't uise a Jacobs chuck to hold an end mill. get the proper size collet or end mill holder. You can get a full set on ebay very cheap. Its worth getting the right tools to do the job. Once you have everything, you will find a million other uses for it. I have had a harbor freight mini mill for a while and have had no issues with it.
One of the better values is the ICON set from Harbor Freight: Flex head ratchet and bit set There are other varieties, but this one is the most versatile that I've found for the price. I like that the end of the ratchet is also a 1/4" bit driver and the extension always comes in handy. There are some similar bike ratchets.
In December, I decided to take the plunge into milling a "paperweight" into a receiver. I looked around the web and bought a Harbor Freight Mini Mill. Once I got it assembled I found that the z-axis travel was very limited especially when you have either a vice or some other device to hold your receiver down. They are directional, it wasn't backwards, learned long ago to always check for assembly errors when Harbor Freight things don't work as designed, it's been entirely too common. I use a Taig mini lathe that I bought probably 10 years ago. It's worked well for center punching cones for the half dozen F1 cans I've built. I did buy the Harbor Freight mini mill so I could clip cones, both have been used exclusively for F1 work. ETA: Punching through the end cap for a .300 can. Since I started using a harbor freight mini press it makes the job super easy. No more swinging that big ass hammer. No more swinging that big ass hammer. I have seen other posts similar to yours about using a press to push out taper pins, but to date I have seen no photos or even better yet youtube videos of it being done.
