For me I went with a used mini, a Vermeer s600. Reasons for choosing a mini was mostly for ability to haul it. At the time I was 90% working solo and needed to haul my bucket truck, chipper and loader in one trip. The mini skid can ramp up into the chip box whereas the full size has to have a dedicated trailer. Introducing FrankenFinn. Converted to tracks and diesel. I bought it like this. It is a good light mini. Can pick up 500ish lbs. probably due to the extra weight of the undercarriage. The original wheeled version will be lighter. But for the price point it is not a bad starter unit. But it is slow for long hauls. I am shopping for a mini skid steer. Is a grapple the best route? Thinking grapple / bucket would be best all around attachment. Should I buy one small enough to fit in 36" gate? Vermeer 800 looks awesome but won't fit in gate.
I haven't seen a big/heavy lifting mini skid on tires. The Boxer 427w used to be a reasonablely heavy lifter. I use a mini excavator for the majority of my (tree) material handling/loading. I only use a "loader" (wheel, tracked, or articulating) to . The mini doesn't need to move around as much. For awhile I was forwarding brush/wood to the driveway with the avant and having another guy on the mini feeding the chipper. I've been back and forth on this argument with myself, but I just can't justify the wheel loader purchase. They're great on lawns, but the mini really isn't bad.

My biggest issue with the mini skid is turf damage. We currently run the full size type skid loader asv rc50 green tracks which are awesome on the turf and pick up a heavy load, yet the minis I've seen pick up a fraction of the asv combined with turf damage I can't see myself to buying a mini unless it had smooth tracks like the asv. Some machines will skid steer on a 4x4 sheet of plywood, rotating in place. @flushcut calls saw chips on the ground / mat/ plywood by the term 'mini butter', IIRC. Otherwise I would agree to the benefits of turf tires, the tread on mine are very aggressive on grass until they start wearing to slick

According to the salesman the previous owners preferred them to be bald to prevent lawn damage. Turning in place it will still destroy a lawn, but anything short of that and there is no damage.
