Common CAT 242 Skid Steer Problems
I have a 2015 cat 242d with 3200 hours on it. It runs awesome most of the time but then all of a sudden it will start smoking excessively. Once when it was. I have a Cat 252B2 that will lose power and smokes blue from the exhaust. Before it would do this when there was a 1/4 tank of fuel and now the last 2 times it did this when the tank was half full. I changed the fuel filter with no results.I have a cat 242 skid, for quite awhile now, the machine will be running perfectly fine, then begin to sputter, and miss, eventually stopping running. If I crank it over for 60+ seconds, it slowly sputters and comes back to life.
Main problem was that while under full throttle it was blowing blueish smoke, not bad but enough to know its not normal. Was left out in a major rainstorm the other day and its been below zero for the last couple days. Absolutely zero smoke out the exhaust while it was running. Tried running it off a seperate primer pump from a bucket of clean fuel. No change so I'm suspecting an injection pump issue. Like DGODGR said replace the fuel filter. Cat #233-9856 Wix #33754. While you are at it I'd add some anti-gel/water remover/injector cleaner.
