With 8000 lb. axles and good brakes I wouldn't be afraid to pull it with a 3/4 ton. If you go gooseneck it would be a lot better as the load distribution is better. I have a 24 foot gooseneck with three 7000 lb. axles and 17.5 tires that works great for my 95 kubota. I am sure you are over that with the setup you described. The GCWR takes into account things like suspension, brakes, etc. so it's a better picture of what the truck can honestly control. I would go with your idea of buying an older 3/4-ton, or just rent one from Home Depot for the times you need it. As long as you don't exceed the towing specs for your truck you will be fine. Most 1/2 tons are around 7500lbs tow weight, that's the trailer with load. That being said, it would need to be no larger than a Bobcat S100 or similar skid steer.
