I've got an older model 1840 Case skid loader (1990 model). It does not have the plastic/fiberglass access covers on the top of the chain case. How is a guy supposed to remove and install the axle assemblies on this machine? I've managed to do one and it was a real PIA but I have to believe there's a trick to it that I'm missing. Here are the instructions from the service manual: -Start the axle sprocket into the chain compartment and put the top of the chain on the nut and make sure that the bottom of the chain is below the tube for the parking latch. -Start the axle housing onto the studs. -Tilt and hold the top of the axle housing toward the frame. Remove the center sprocket cover and the axle. Feed the chain over the center sprocket and roll the axle sprocket back and feed the chain onto it and reassemble. If it is the inside chain you will have to remoxe both axles and feed the chain to the inside sprocket.

I recently had the wheel bearings go bad on the left front axle housing. Taking it apart and replacing the bearings was pretty easy and straight forward, but putting it back together was a huge PAIN.
Remove the plastic covers to visually see which chain is broken. Have always found it best to remove the wheel and axle housing. After the bolts are off axle housing, pull housing away from machine 1 or 2 inches.
Another possibility would be to remove the master link in the new chain and then reassemble the master link after seating the chain on the sprockets. This sounds like it would be the best option but getting a press tool/device, much less a punch and hammer, into the chain case in order to reinstall the link pins seems an impossibility due to .
